This art is designed for those that admire carbon fiber and the figurative form. Carbon fiber is has an incredible strength to weight ratio. Combining carbon fiber and epoxy makes some of the strongest and lightest composites possible-think fighter jets and formula one race cars.
I purposely make each piece out of one continuous bundle (called a tow) of fibers. Adding the length of all of the fibers in the bundle in one of my pieces can easily go over 1,000 miles. Tribute to Misty took 1582 miles of fiber to make. One continuous bundle is what makes my art unique and a grand challenge to make.
In filament winding, it is impossible to have concave features/valleys in a part when winding. I developed a method for making it possible. Basically each piece has to be sculpted as a mandrel, the fiber is wrapped or wound around the mandrel, then the mandrel is removed. I had to develop lots of “cheats” to make these possible. Each piece takes 4-6 months (nights and weekends) to make-given all the steps.
Each piece is a one-of-a-kind form that could not be exactly duplicated. There are no artist proofs-there is not another form like it on earth-never has been.
I hope you like my work as much as I loved conquering the challenges to make this happen.
